About us.
Pedro Garcia Marques is a Portuguese interdisciplinary designer forging observational and experimental spaces in the residential, commercial and hospitality sector. Functional and substantive storytelling to construct new and expressive narratives for livable habitats.
Juxtaposing contextual queues with novel perspectives is at the center of Pedro’s design process.
Through the exploration of materials, forms, light, nature and a perceptive study of novelty and historical continuity, he creates practical environments that positively transform our emotional landscape.
A brief passage.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the weird but natural relationship between places and their enveloping spaces. Why are buildings or furniture made a certain way? how have culture, society and our evolution as a species shaped our surroundings for millennia?
I started as an industrial designer, formally, let’s say… but ended up working in advertising for a great number of years. Interestingly enough there is a skill in industrial design that I believe is instrumental for great interior design, architecture —any creative field really— but is many times overlooked or set aside in favor of
novelty, just for the sake of it. Industrial design is, at it’s core, one fundamental challenge: come up with a design for product that must perform it’s function while being aesthetically interesting and manufacturable at a viable price for a specific market. This is —many times— an exceptionally hard endeavor and, I believe, industrial designers inherit a distinct way of looking for solutions because of these intrinsic constraints of the trade. When done right, a product inserts itself uniquely in peoples lives without disrupting them or their surroundings and, in the end people might not even realize the overarching impact it’s having.
I think I —naturally— always look at problems that way. I believe it makes for more thoughtful design. Products, working spaces, livings spaces, all with they’re distinct character, crafted for a purpose and blending seamlessly with people, nature and everything around them.
I must admit, I’ve recently become very captivated by tiny homes. I think it’s this weird allure to the challenge of overcoming all those obstacles I mentioned, with the added constraint of —very limited— physical space.”
